Evangelicals look back with pride at being the black robes of the America revolution, preaching from pulpits for a government that stresses fairness, justice, compassion and above all, individual liberty and personal freedoms.
However, 248 years after the founding of our nation, many of these democratic principles are hanging in the balance. Thus, it’s time for today’s version of these religious reformers to re-emerge as the bulwark against government actions that could end people’s freedoms or harm the health, welfare, and economic wellbeing of ordinary Americans.
As the nonpartisan, faith-based organization that equates American democracy with core Christian values, Evangelicals for Democracy (E4D) stands as a strong voice for this vibrant constituency. As such, E4D will be a new force for articulating the faith perspectives of these concerned citizens, and will work individually and collectively with religious leaders, democracy organizations and other stakeholders to counteract disinformation, polarization and threats to our democratic institutions.
The following core principles will guide our work in advancing a faith-inspired pro-democracy policy agenda for the nation.
These principles include respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; limited government; representative democracy; the separation of powers; freedom of expression and of the press; and the rule of law.
The embrace of opinion as fact has evolved from a disturbing trend to a direct threat to our country and people. As long as policymakers refuse to acknowledge a shared truth – such as Americans once enslaved black people, or the HIV virus causes AIDS – there will be no meaningful solutions to the problems facing the country. This is why E4D will fight disinformation; debunk conspiracy theories; and stand for science, the scientific method, and the value of science to mankind. On these matters, we will work with experts in their fields to assemble and communicate proven, evidence-based facts that will rebuild trust in our institutions and inform reasoned policymaking.
Accordingly, E4D will work with a broad constituency of stakeholders to articulate a faith perspective on the need to challenge these policies. This will entail a transparent and open process to help citizens, the media, and policymakers understand what is at stake and how pro-democracy policies contribute to the economic, political and medical health of our states and the nation.
Thus, E4D will be a willing participant in fruitful conversations across the country with individuals, community leaders and public officials that leads to a shared understanding of the common good. This will mean being honest, fair and humble towards those who disagree with our positions or regard progressive evangelicals as “the enemy.” Although civility can be hard work, we wholeheartedly agree that those who want justice in society must be open-minded and willing to connect with individuals on their own terms.
