American Democracy or Christian Nationalism

American democracy is not just about laws but a way of life. Yet now there is increasing talk about declaring the U.S. a “Christian nation,” which goes against both American democracy and Christianity itself.

The Bill of Rights guarantees the same freedom of religion for all people. And Christian faith affirms the ideal that a right for one is a right for another and a responsibility for all. Further, the principle that rights are universal, and responsibilities are mutual is the Golden Rule of civic life.

While American democracy has thrived on adherence to these principles, Christian nationalism threatens people’s moral striving for freedom, justice and truth and thus, the country itself. It’s time to learn what Christian nationalism is and how you can stand up for democracy.
