Stand Up for Science

Although we live in a time of unprecedented scientific advances, growing mistrust in science is a fact of life with serious repercussions for the health of Americans and our natural resources.

Science, technology, and innovation are cornerstones of the American economy. From AI and medical advances to space exploration, the US is considered a world leader in scientific achievement. Yet, these advances also come at a time when disinformation and misinformation about complex scientific issues like vaccination schedules and climate change are fueling conspiracy theories and false beliefs.

The consequence is a growing crisis in public health and safety compounded by uninformed public policy. When political leaders discount findings from credible scientific institutions in favor of alternative sources, they may refuse to support policies aimed at mitigating climate change or increasing protections needed for clean air, water, nutritious food or safe workplaces. Similarly, when people distrust the scientific process, they may avoid seeking necessary medical treatment due to suspicion of medical practices or diagnoses or refuse to take preventative measures, leading to outbreaks of preventable diseases.

There is good news: a 2024 survey from the Pew Research Center finds that 76 percent of Americans express a great deal or fair amount of confidence in scientists to act in the public’s best interests. Reflecting this consensus, E4D will stand for America’s scientific enterprise, the scientific method, and scientific knowledge when engaging policymakers, making the case that regardless of the issue, science is essential to improve the health of the public and fuel the nation’s economy.
